Alberto- Chilean Couple-Poem-Lessons Learned
You have shown me something
I have been privileged
You are struggling to get by
I thought I would get a taste of the hard life
I have not
Everywhere I have gone
People have been hospitable
And shown me kindness
Who has been kind to you?
You have starved
You have been in prison
And for what?
For having a different belief?
For wanting a better life?
I thought this journey would give me experience
That it would show me the hard life
It hasn't
But you have.
You have lived the hard life.
I like how you point out that Alberto is already privileged, and yet people give him hospitality, often for free. On the other hand, the Chilean couple is poor and nobody helps them out. Even though I don't think Communism is right, it is true that they should not be imprisoned just for having different beliefs.
ReplyDeleteThis is very good. I like the idea of Alberto noticing their struggle. Everyone is struggling in some way. Alberto and Ernesto are strugglng on their journey, but the fact that you have Alberto notice the Chilean couples struggle as well as his own brings more depth to the character. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThis poem brief, which gave a great impact. We don't really get to read about how Alberto feels and thinks about specific things in Ernesto's diary. But this was fascinating to read:)
